Chiropractic care and children
Children benefit from chiropractic for the same problems that adults are treated for, predominately musculo-skeletal disorders. For example, children have a fairly high incidence of back pain and other musculo-skeletal problems caused by participation in sports, sitting in desks at school, computer activities and frequent tumbles and falls.
Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, surgery-free therapies available for the treatment of spinal pain syndromes and it is recognized that the profession’s scope of practice include treating patients of all ages.
Are chiropractors trained to treat children?
Yes. Chiropractors have 7 years of university level training including 756 hours of training exclusively in adjustment techniques. Treatment for children is adapted to the age and frame of the child and delivered in a gentle manner to which children respond well. Dr. Stackhouse has treated hundreds of children with consistently excellent results.
What childhood conditions can chiropractors treat?
Chiropractic is incredibly effective in treating neck and back pain and there is well-documented evidence of the prevalence of back pain in children. Children can also benefit from a spinal check-up in key stages the same way they benefit from dental check-ups or eye examinations. For example, starting to sit, crawl and walk are developmental points at which a check-up will confirm that the spine is function properly or warn of any potential problems.
Chiropractors consistently see evidence that the spinal adjustment of infants and children has positive effects on a variety of conditions including colic and asthma. A study done in 1999 concluded that “spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic.” It compared the effects of chiropractic on the condition with a commonly prescribed medication to relieve colic. The results are so compelling that the Danish Public Health Authority has given its public nurses approval to refer infants with colic to chiropractors. A study on chiropractic care and asthma, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1998, concluded that there was a trend in patients’ quality of life due to diminished severity of asthma attacks and reduction of the amount of medication taken. Starting chiropractic care at a young age improves the child's overall health and corrects issues that, if ignored, could cause more severe problems later in life.
